Generalized anxiety is an anxiety disorder  in which the anxiety is not oriented towards any specific stimulus, situation or object. The person who suffers from generalized anxiety lives in a more or less constant state of anxiety without being able to explain what is causing it .

Anxiety is sometimes a normal part of life. We all worry about things like health problems, money, or family problems. However, people with generalized anxiety disorder worry extremely or feel very nervous about these and many other things, even when there is little or no reason to worry. It is not easy for people with generalized anxiety disorder to control their anxiety and stay focused on daily activities. At this point  it is best to seek a Psychologist who specializes in the treatment of generalized anxiety .

The  generalized anxiety disorder  develops slowly and usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood and. People with this disorder may have some  symptoms such as:

  • Worrying too much about everyday things
  • Having trouble controlling your worries or feelings of nervousness
  • Be aware that they care much more than they should
  • Feeling restless or having trouble relaxing
  • Having trouble concentrating
  • Having trouble sleeping or staying asleep
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Have unexplained headaches, muscle aches, stomach aches, or aches
  • Have difficulty swallowing
  • Have tremors or tics (nervous movements)
  • Feeling irritable or nervous
  • Sweating a lot, feeling dizzy or short of breath

In children and adolescents , generalized anxiety disorder is usually due to concerns related to school and / or sports performance and fear of some catastrophe (earthquakes, fires, wars).

Already in adulthood , the concerns of people with generalized anxiety are usually related to work (job stability, stress, …), the health of both themselves and their children and relatives, money or the accumulation of tasks at home and away and the need to complete them.

The Psychologist through cognitive-behavioral therapy assumes that generalized anxiety is produced, in part, by illogical, distorted and unreal thoughts. Therefore, the goal of therapy to control and overcome generalized anxiety  is for the patient to develop skills that allow them to recognize, eliminate, and correct these faulty assumptions. In this way, you can deal with these situations differently.

The strategies used by the Psychologist include psychoeducation, exposure, cognitive strategies, and problem-solving techniques.

If you are suffering from generalized anxiety, it is best to seek a Psychologist who specializes in the treatment of generalized anxiety , since early detection and / or treatment can help avoid major problems in the future.
