Triscaidephobia: Are you afraid of the number 13?

Superstitious people avoid actions such as crossing a black cat, breaking a mirror, or going under a ladder at all costs.

Although none of them will be to your liking, there is one that they will respect at all costs and that is not wanting to know anything about everything that has to do with the number 13 , to the point that some develop triscaidephobia or fear of that number.

Not surprisingly, that is the figure that since time immemorial has been associated with  bad luck  and there are many who think that running into it is synonymous with a fatal omen, so that animosity for it has been growing throughout the ages.

What is Triscaidephobia

The one that concerns us is a phobia that is characterized by the  disproportionate fear of the number 13 , a belief so ingrained that, for example, in certain elevators in all corners of the planet, people go directly from the 12th to the 14th floor. that in many hospitals or hotels there are no rooms with this number.

It is said that, in France, there came to be a group of nobles called quatorziennes  (the “fourteenths”) whose mission was to attend social events as the fourteenth guest, in the event that one finally did not attend and was reduced to 13 the number of people attending the celebration.

What is the origin of the fear of the number 13

The origin of the fear aroused around 13 is not too clear, considering a multitude of theories, such as the fact that  thirteen people shared the Last Supper .

Thus, there is the belief that the supposed ” evil ” of thirteen resides in that it goes far beyond the divine structure of twelve.

In the biblical context, the number 12 tends to represent a divine and complete organization.

In addition, the same Bible defines in chapter 13 of Revelation a “wild beast” that had seven heads and ten horns, on which ten diadems were perched and on the heads a name of blasphemy.

The mythology vikinga not others remained was to this question, because it is believed during a dinner in the sky of this Nordic people, the Valhalla, the gods doces were on the table when they saw appear to the thirteenth person, named Loki.

The latter managed to trick the blind brother of Balder, Odin’s second son, with the idea that he would throw a dart at his brother, managing to kill him.

As if all this were not enough, the movie  “Friday the 13th”,  which in some Latin American countries is known as ” Tuesday the 13th “, did a disservice to those who already feared number 13.

This horror film was released in 1980, becoming a classic of the Slasher subgenre and is considered one of the great cult films. In this way, the already widespread phobia of Fridays that fell on the 13th, increased.

The positive reality of the number 13 in Numerology

Since this phobia is derived, to a great extent, from the legend and mythology that has always surrounded this number, I would like to tell you about the “benefits” of these two digits, from the most esoteric point of view that can exist for numbers, numerology.

The number 13 is not an unfortunate number . There is nothing to fear about this number. In various cultures, this number is considered positive.

In   Aztec culture , the   sacred divinatory calendar  was established in this way:

  • 1 year = 260 days = 20 months (called  13-day cycles  ) made up of  13 days.

What’s more, the Aztecs conceived of time through 52-year cycles called Xiuhmolpilli (considered an “Aztec century”).

This cycle was divided in this way: 4 periods of   13 years .

Here, the   number 13   takes the form of a temporary unit that symbolizes the end of a cycle and establishes a kind of balance.

In the same vein, the Celtic calendar was synchronized with the Lunar Cycle, consisting of 13 months (28 days / month ).

The numbers 13 reinforced the positive character of the number 13, of the harmony and balance of the cosmos.

Symptoms of a Triscaidephobic

Some of these phobics try to avoid the bad luck number at all times but, if for some reason they cannot avoid it, they come to tolerate the discomfort it causes them.

However, there is no shortage of people for whom this phobia generates a  significant picture of anxiety  when they encounter the number 13 in any of its manifestations.

As with any other type of panic attack, rapid heart rate, chest pain, and sweating will not take long to appear.

Overcoming the phobia associated with bad luck

People who can tolerate the number 13, although they find it very unpleasant, probably do not need any treatment.

They will surely try to avoid it (we have already mentioned that hotels, hospitals and even transport companies make it easy for them in that sense) and they will not have to take any further action.

As for those who really have a phobia of number 13, they will require professional help. The  psychological therapies  can be of great use and, if necessary, could even be medicated for anxiety control, always under the watchful prescribing appropriate expert.

As in other phobias,  the progressive confrontation with the object of the phobia  is essential to begin to overcome the problem.

Along with this technique, another tool that can be used is to write down everything that is thought around this number to later vary these negative and irrational thoughts for more positive and reasonable ones.

Deep breathing, meditation, or yoga techniques are equally helpful for anxiety control when the unlucky number cannot be dodged.

Therapies are often effective in combating the strangest phobias that are known. In addition to the fear of the number 13, there are others little known such as the fear of long words, there are people who have a phobia of cheese in all its variants, or even others cannot handle their money because they are afraid of it.
