WHAT IS IT?
Depression is not being sad or reacting sadly to a serious situation. Children, like adults, can feel sad when there are changes that alter the “normality” in their life (the death of a loved one, the divorce of their parents, the diagnosis of a chronic illness, school failure or failure). rejection of a friend …).
We talk about children suffering from a childhood depression disorder when this sadness negatively interferes with the development of their daily lives, causing pain both for those who suffer from it and for those around them.
SYMPTOMS HOW TO KNOW IF A CHILD HAS CHILD DEPRESSION?
Depression also affects children, their lack of maturity makes them more vulnerable, and they do not always know how to explain what they feel. The most common symptoms that should make you think that your child is going through childhood depression would be:
- Gets irritated very easily with or without displays of anger or hostility
- Is frequently sad or has crying spells
- Has feelings of hopelessness
- Decreased interest in activities or difficulty having fun in previously favorite activities
- Is constantly bored
- Shows lack of energy
- Is isolated
- Shows low self-esteem or a sense of guilt or responsibility for bad things that may happen
- Frequent complaints about physical problems (such as headaches or stomachaches, dizziness, nausea …) for which no medical cause is found
- Decrease in their school performance
- Have concentration problems
- Shows significant changes in eating or sleeping habits
These symptoms can occur in isolation or together, but to speak of childhood depression, the symptoms have to persist for at least 2 weeks.
